Richard Strauss’ first tone poem, Don Juan, is not about the lecherous Don Juan of legend, but about the sympathetic hero of a poem by Nikolaus Lenau who yearns for a love which can never be. Bartók’s Third Piano Concerto was composed as a surprise birthday gift for his wife and is one of his last and most light-hearted works. A work of extraordinary beauty and vitality, Symphony No. 39 is one of Mozart’s grandest symphonic creations.
