Directed by Steve James, Abacus: Small Enough to Jail, tells the story of the only U.S. bank to face indictment and to be put on trial for mortgage fraud in the wake of the 2008 financial disaster. Owned and operated by Thomas Sung, a Chinese immigrant, Abacus Federal Savings has helped countless individuals start a life in America by giving out loans to people that other institutions would normally deny. Both a legal drama and an intimate portrait of familial loyalty, Abacus takes a detailed look into the Sung family’s five-year, ten-million-dollar court battle as they courageously defend themselves against a powerful financial institution and struggle to retain the reputation of their small bank in their immigrant community.
