You may know Scott Hanley as a voice from the radio, including playing the great music of Jazz artists from Pittsburgh’s storied past and increasingly active present-day jazz scene on WZUM, the Pittsburgh Jazz Channel.
Detroit native Scott Hanley is also a gifted and experienced singer - including years of training and performance in classical voice, musical theater and choral music in Ann Arbor. That upbringing also had him on trumpet and trombone, including as a student of noted trumpeter and educator E. Louis Smith (Blue Note, Steeplechase) as well as working with many other talented teachers and performers.
Scott was deeply involved with music, and he also started working in radio professionally while in his teens. As his radio career progressed, he moved around the country, from metro Detroit to Beaumont Texas - where he spent daytimes on the radio and evenings engaging with the music scene in southeast Texas. A move to Grand Rapids, Michigan to help start a new NPR station also found him connecting with numerous players in that scene, including Pittsburgh natives Doug Cook, Mel Dalton and Eddie Russ, plus scores of great players, educators and leaders. Early on, his music shifted in focus to apply his smooth baritone voice and storytelling style to jazz and music from the American Songbook.
Scott was also active in helping present scores of local, regional and national jazz artists in Michigan, and also made his own recordings, including two duo dates, one with guitarist Gene Bertoncini and another with pianist Oliver Jones (soon to be released).
By the time Scott arrived in Pittsburgh in 1995, his focus shifted to teaching, national service to NPR and public media and the business of radio management with WDUQ. While he sat in, rarely, with the likes of Joe Negri and others, most of his musical performing was out of town, but that has changed.
At the Greer Cabaret, September 9, hear Scott with interpretations of music from jazz notables like Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Don Redman and songwriters like Matt Dennis, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Johnny Mercer, Rodgers and Hart, Buddy Johnson and more. Scott Hanley will be joined at the Greer Cabaret Lounge with a stellar trio of Max Leake, piano; Dwayne Dolphin, bass and Thomas Wendt, drums.
You can also hear Scott on the radio on WZUM, the Pittsburgh Jazz Channel, including his Pittsburgh-based program of new jazz, jazz news and interviews, “The Scene.”
