Eighty-three percent of New York City’s population, one of the most religious large cities in the US, claims to be affiliated with an organized religion. However, per capita, Pittsburgh, PA has more than five times as many houses of worship. In response to this, I created a project called gatherings: over a 13-month period, I visited 100 places of worship, choosing from Pittsburgh's nearly 1500 temples, churches, synagogues and mosques. I did this despite the fact, and because of the fact, that those dedicated to a religious practice and those devoted to an artistic practice are often (not always, but often) quite different people.
