Detailed Plot Summary (Spoilers)

A hilarious re-envisioning of Hamlet, FAT HAM introduces us to Juicy, the queer Black son of a recently deceased hog farmer. Something is certainly rotten at the backyard cookout celebrating the wedding of Juicy’s mother Tedra to his uncle, Rev. As Juicy is goaded by the ghost of his father to homicidal revenge, he struggles to find his own identity and voice amidst the chorus of family opinions. An uproarious examination of love, loss, and sexuality, the play expands on Shakespeare’s universe replacing the bard’s dour massacre with an epic, camp celebration.

March 2 – 24, 2024

A co-production with TheatreSquared (Fayetteville, AR)

This uproariously funny, Pulitzer Prize-winning new play comes to us straight from Broadway! A modern revamp of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Fat Ham follows Juicy, a queer, pensive, young Black man finding his way in the world, when the ghost of his father demands Juicy avenges his murder. Set at the family cookout, this “hilarious yet profound tragedy smothered in comedy” (The New York Times) examines love, loss, and a particular set of daddy issues.
